The large pictogram — a hand reaching toward a surface with heat waves rising from it — shows the hazard and the action to avoid before anyone reads a word. The message panel confirms it: Hot surface. Do not touch.

The Safety Yellow header carries black CAUTION lettering and the safety alert symbol (black triangle, yellow exclamation mark), in the colors specified by ANSI Z535.1-2022. The vertical layout fits the narrow spots where hot-surface signs usually go: pipe runs, machine guards, oven sides, and door frames.

Why CAUTION, not WARNING or DANGER: ANSI Z535.2-2023 §4.14.3 defines CAUTION as a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury. That fits surfaces where brief contact causes a minor burn. If the surface is hot enough to cause severe burns — which Annex D of the standard lists as a serious injury — use a WARNING burn hazard sign instead. Matching the signal word to the actual burn risk reduces compliance and liability exposure.

https://qualitysignschicago.com/products/caution-hot-surface-do-not-touch-vertical-sign-ansi-aluminum
